Key Words: Republican Sen. Jeff Flake writes check to Roy Moore’s Democratic opponent Doug Jones
‘Country over Party.’
That’s the memo scribbled by Republican Jeff Flake, who has opted not to run for re-election to his Senate seat from Arizona, on a $100 campaign-contribution check apparently written Tuesday to Doug Jones, the Democratic contender for U.S. Senate in an Alabama special election set for next week.
Jones’s rival for the seat, of course, is Republican Roy Moore, twice removed from the state supreme court and lately accused of sexual misconduct including attempting to initiate sexual relations with girls as young as 14 while in his 30s.
Much of the Republican firmament, including President Donald Trump, has this week fallen in line behind Moore, with Trump arguing at turns that allegations against Moore are not admitted to or proven and that, in any event, his election would be preferable to that of Jones based on party affiliation alone.
Flake, who has not, did, however, come in for criticism for allowing himself to be seated beside Trump at a White House event Tuesday at which the president said he expected Moore would “do well” while Jones, if elected, would be a mere acolyte of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. “We want strong borders,” Trump said. “We want stopping crime. We want the things we represent.”
The Washington Post said Flake had been used as a prop.
