1 dead, 1 injured in Sunday-night shooting; death marks city’s 100th homicide this year
Two people were shot – one of them fatally – in a north Birmingham public housing community late Sunday night.
Gunfire erupted inside an apartment on 29th Court North in Birmingham’s Collegeville neighborhood at 10:37 p.m., police said. One man, in his mid-20s, was pronounced dead on the scene.
A second man was shot in the head, but initial reports were that his injury was not life-threatening, said North Precinct Lt. Shelia Finney. He was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Police said the shooting is being investigated as a homicide. Homicide investigators on the scene were trying to determine what led to the shooting. The surviving victim ran from the apartment after the shots were fired.
No suspects were in custody. The fatality victim’s brother and other family members arrived on the scene shortly after midnight.
The investigation is ongoing.
