Robo-calls invite Alabamians to Trump appearance in Florida
The White House said President Donald Trump was not coming to Alabama to campaign for Roy Moore, but some people in the state have reported getting invitations to the president’s appearance in Florida next week.
People have tweeted and reported on Facebook that they received recorded phone calls from the president’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, inviting them to his appearance in Pensacola next Friday.
“Hi, this is Lara Trump, calling on behalf of my father-in-law, President Donald Trump,” the recording says. “I’m incredibly excited to invite you to an event in your area. A special rally event featuring President Donald Trump will take place on Friday, December 8th at the Pensacola Bay Center.”
The message tells people how to get free tickets. It does not mention Moore or the Alabama Senate race, which Trump has taken an interest in for months.
The White House announced on Monday that Trump would not appear in Alabama on behalf of Moore’s campaign, although the president has expressed his support for Moore over Democratic nominee Doug Jones in the Dec. 12 special election for the U.S. Senate.
Trump did come to Alabama to campaign for Moore’s opponent in the Sept. 26 runoff for the Republican nomination, Sen. Luther Strange.
Efforts to get comments from the Moore and Jones campaigns for this story were unsuccessful.
At an appearance in Montgomery on Friday night, Jones was asked if he is concerned about Trump swaying undecided voters.
“We’re going to continue to run our campaign the way we believe it should be, and that is directly to the people, talking about the kitchen-table issues,” Jones said. “So we’re not going to worry about that. We’re not going to worry about somebody that’s campaigning in another state. We’re going to be campaigning in Alabama, all the time, 24-7, between now and December 12th.”
It showed up on my caller ID as “Donald J Trump” with a 251 area code. The recording said it was paid for by “Donald J Trump for President.”
