View from the Right: Put climate change into perspective and take politics out of it
Man must believe in something, or he begins to feel he is nothing. Historically traditional religions filled the void, but modern science first destroyed and then supplanted that anchor for the billions we call secular humanists.
Every religion must stamp out heresy, and what I call the “Church of Climate Change” is no exception. Just as the medieval clergy condemned Jews and Muslims as deniers of Christ, the CCC condemns its skeptics as “climate-change deniers.”
Most religions relish co-opting the power of government to further their aims, and the CCC is no exception. Their political champion, President Barack Obama, had his environmental initiatives spurned by the people’s representatives in Congress. So he turned to the federal EPA bureaucracy in his last years in office to further the climate-change agenda.
President Donald Trump is steadily undoing that work, leading unhinged environmentalists to the left’s usual last resort – threats of violence. EPA chief Scott Pruitt has received more than 70 credible threats from environmentalist zealots in the few months he has been in office. Ironically, that has forced Pruitt to take armed members of the EPA’s environmental enforcement division out of field work for use as 24/7 security.
Obama abused his constitutional authority to implement his Clean Power Plan through the EPA bureaucracy rather than through legislation. It set costly CO2 emissions standards for each state, forcing compliance by 2022 without any congressional approval. His de-facto cap-and-trade scheme had been rejected by Congress, even when his own party completely controlled it in 2009. Obama also encouraged the EPA to adopt a tortured interpretation of its statutory authority under the Clean Water Act, expanding its reach far beyond what any sane person would consider a “navigable waterway.”
All these excesses are in the process of being dismantled by the people’s wrecking ball, Donald Trump, who shows a keener respect for constitutional constraints on the executive than his frustrated constitutional-professor predecessor.
When Trump slammed the door on the Paris Climate Accord, an Obama executive agreement that was yet another usurpation of congressional power, there was reflexive outrage on the environmental Left. The outrage ignored a hard reality – the feel-good accord would have cost a hundred trillion dollars with only microscopic results.
We need to put climate change into perspective and take politics and Gaia worship out of it. Despite the Union of Concerned Scientists’ propaganda position that man is 100 percent responsible, skeptics know the earth has been fitfully warming, just as it did after 13 previous ice ages, for at least 10,000 years.
Unfortunately, our CO2 won’t stop the earth from falling into another ice age. You can bet the secularists will be praying for global warming when that happens.
