Newt Gingrich gives endorsement to Roy Moore in Senate race
Political commentator and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has endorsed Roy Moore in Alabama’s Senate campaign.
The support from Gingrich, a Republican who has been a vocal proponent of President Trump, was announced Wednesday morning by the Moore campaign.
Moore faces Democrat Doug Jones in the Dec. 12 election.
Gingrich pointed to Moore’s promise to support Trump’s agenda as the deciding factor in his endorsement.
"There’s nothing more important for advancing the President’s agenda than having another conservative voice in the U.S. Senate – which is why we need Judge Roy Moore in Washington," Gingrich said in the announcement. "Roy Moore is a West Point graduate, Vietnam veteran and constitutional scholar who has been a fighter for our conservative values. He will help rebuild our military and stop the gross overreach of federal power.
"I’m proud to endorse Judge Roy Moore for Senator and ask you to join me in supporting him,"
Gingrich, who represented Georgia’s 6th Congressional District for 20 years, served as Speaker from 1995-1999. He helped design the "Contract with America," which helped the GOP take control of the House in 1995.
He also ran for president in 2012.
"Newt Gingrich is a visionary leader, not only for the conservative cause, but for the entire country," Moore said in the announcement. "The Contract with America of 1994 was a landmark in American political history and forged the modern Republican Party’s identity as a party committed to tax cuts, welfare reform, and fiscal responsibility.
"I welcome Newt’s support, and I look forward to working with him on policy ideas to rebuild the military, reduce spending, and rein in the national debt."
